Alan Handley is the manager of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Group at LGC Ltd and was previously Separation Science Manager at ICI Ltd. His role in LGC has involved working on projects in support of the “Government Chemists Program”, which has included position papers on future trends in both technology and regulatory compliance, and the development of analytical methodologies for target compounds in support of the EU Directives.
He currently manages teams involved with chromatography, spectroscopic, elemental and physical analysis and has experience in pharmaceutical, chemical, environmental and forensic analysis.
He is the author of a number of books and is editor for CRC’s “Analytical Chemistry” series, a book reviewer for Wiley and provides regular articles for “Chromatography Today”.
He has authored papers and patents on the subjects of liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, spectroscopic techniques and sample preparation, and has presented papers at international and UK conferences and Instrument companies on the above subjects.
Alan is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, President of The Chromatographic Society, Associate of the Chromatographic Society of India a member the Government’s Measurement Science and Technology Advisory Group for Chemistry Innovation and Honorary Lecturer at the University of Bangor,
He is currently President Elect of the RSC Analytical Division, a member of the RSC Awards Committee, the  Analytical Methods Trust ,is the Analytical Divisions representative on the EuCheMS DAC Study Group on QA and a member of the Merseyside Schools Analyst Committee.
He has previously held positions as Chairman of the RSC Analytical Methods Committee, Assessor for the RSC Analytical Chemists Register, Chairman of the Analytical Division NW Region, a member of the RSC Analytical Division Council, Honorary Research Associate at Royal Holloway University of London, Visiting Lecturer at the University of Salford and member of the Industrial Liaison Boards of UMIST and Lancaster Universities.
